The Palestinian Medical Relief Society in Palestine is a grassroots community-based health organization founded in 1979 by a group of Palestinian doctors and health professionals seeking to supplement the decayed and inadequate health infrastructure caused by Israeli military occupation. PMRS national health programs emphasize prevention, education, community participation and the empowerment of the individual.
PMRS reaches the most afflicted populations of Palestinian society, mainly those of the refugee camps and the villagers of “Area C”. In many of these areas, their residents would not normally have access to primary care were it not for the services of PMRS.
PMRS notably runs a program of mobile clinics which reaches hundreds of Palestinian villages, including in “Area C” of the West Bank, where many are under threat of settler harassment and Israeli government demolition orders. The mobile clinics ensure routine primary care and pharmaceutical services to the Palestinian residents of these villages, who would otherwise have difficulty physically and financially accessing clinics.
